Some days this season it has been the offense; other times, it has been the defense. Some games, outside shooting; others, points from the paint.
And then there was this: total domination.
The Lady Irish of Sacred Heart cruised to a 46-16 win over Cathedral High School Sunday afternoon at Sacred Heart Gym to win the Archdiocesan Championship.
Three Irish starters contributed nine points: Senior Sophia Balaj, Junior Colleen Reilly, and Sophomore Emma Dronzek. Senior Point Guard Theresa Egason added eight points. Billie Kelly scored six, Kelly Carlo added three points, and Alexis Thompson scored two to round out the scoring.
Early in the first quarter, the Irish trailed 5-2. A few defensive stops later, the Irish were up 8-5. They never looked back. Cathedral had played the Irish tough twice in earlier meetings before fading in the second half. Yet this time, the Irish left nothing to chance, using an airtight defense to force Cathedral into low percentage shots throughout the game.
With the victory, the Irish now move to the City Playoffs. Their next time game will be in the Semi-Finals on Thursday at Sacred Heart Gym, with both the time of the game and opponent to be determined.
