Not even a driving rainstorm could slow down the Sacred Heart Boys Soccer team, as they defeated rival Cardinal Hayes, 5-0 at Tibbets Field, Yonkers. Cheered by a hearty group of Sacred Heart students, seemingly oblivious to the driving rain, the Irish took advantage of a red card handed out to a Hayes player mid-way through the first half, pressuring Hayes on the attack, and playing hard-nosed defense.
The Irish broke a scoreless tie shortly after the second half began, with Senior Co-Captain Eddie Nika pouncing on a rebound of his previously saved penalty kick. With a goal cushion, the Irish continued the attack, with Junior Rory Gallagher scoring twice. Senior Nika then headed home a corner kick from Sophomore Andres Benitez. Gallgaher finished the scoring and completed his first career Hat Trick by chipping a shot home over the Hayes goalkeeper.
Cardinal Hayes managed only one shot on target on Senior Co-Captain Adrian Gallagher in net, due to the solid defense of Seniors Ciaran Burke and Michael Alvarado, Junior Norbert Deak, and Sophomore Geraldo Pablo.
This victory pushes the defending champions to the top of their division.
