In what could very well be a preview of playoff basketball, the Sacred Heart Lady Irish (2-0, 1-0) shook off a slow start to defeat rival Saint Barnabas on Tuesday, December 1, at Sacred Heart Gym, 46-39.
Down 16-10 at the half, the Lady Irish rebounded with a strong third quarter, cutting their deficit to one. The fourth quarter saw the Irish pull away to seal their first conference vicotry. Sacred Heart was led by Senior Point Guard Theresa Egasan, who, along with her team-leading 11 points, contributed 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 8 steals. Egasan was aided by senior Sophia Balaj who scored 10 points, 9 of which came in the third quarter to add to her 7 rebounds. Junior Colleen Reilly contributed off the bench, scoring 9 points to go along with 6 rebounds. Junior Alexis Thompson (7 points), Sophomore Emma Dronzek (6 points), Junior Billie Kelly (2 points), and Junior Kelly Carlo (1 point) rounded out the scoring.
The Lady Irish continue their conference schedule with another home game on Thursday, December 3, against Cathedral Prep. The Junior Varsity will play at 4:30, with the Varsity game to follow.
