Sacred Heart High School is pleased to announce the formation of a Boys Gaelic Football Team, the first of its kind in the nation, beginning in January 2017.
Sacred Heart will partner with the Mr. Simon Gillespie of the NYGAA (New York Gaelic Athletic Association) to pilot this exciting program.
Practices are slated to begin in January, with an eye toward competitions beginning this spring. Young men of all grade levels and abilities are invited to participate.
About the Sport:
Gaelic Football is one of the oldest team sports in the world and is a combination of various different sports skills including basketball, soccer, and rugby. In this Team Field Sport, the object of the game is to score by either kicking the ball over the crossbar of the football-shaped goal posts for one point or into the soccer-style net for three points.
About the Coach:
Simon Gillespie has been employed as the Games Development Officer for the New York Gaelic Athletic Association since 2010. Currently there are 2,500 active playing members in the New York GAA, the largest chapter of the Gaelic Athletic Association outside of Ireland. Simon has coached juvenile and adult-level New York All-Star representative teams and certified almost 400 new coaches in Gaelic Games in New York.
